William Contreras, a two-time scholarship recipient, says the awards opened the door to an education his āfamily has never had.ā The funding helps cover tuition, books, and tools at Lane Community College. As the first in his family to attend college, he hopes to start his own auto repair business and inspire his younger siblings. āHaving been chosen means a lot,ā he says, ābecause I can set a good example.ā
Hope-Ann Whitaker, a two-time scholarship recipient from rural Central Oregon, returned to school in her 30s to pursue a career in science and technology. After struggling with school in the past, ²õ³ó±šās now excelling. Hope-Ann credits the scholarship with easing financial pressures, allowing her to focus on her education. āThis time around I am an A and B student; I even made the honor roll,ā she says.
